The whole park is fenced to keep poachers out, which has let its rhino population grow steadily for decades. It sits within easy reach of Nairobi, making it a natural first or last stop on a longer Kenya safari.

Why Visit Lake Nakuru?

Nakuru’s name comes from the Maasai word for a dusty place, though today it’s better known for the opposite, a shallow, alkaline lake ringed by forest, cliffs and grassland. What makes it different from Kenya’s other parks is the fence. Built originally to protect black rhino from poachers, it now encloses the whole park, which means wildlife can’t wander off and predators can’t easily wander in from outside, a combination that’s turned Nakuru into one of the most reliable rhino-viewing parks in Africa. It’s compact enough to explore properly in a day, which makes it a natural stop on the way to or from the Maasai Mara.

Wildlife in Lake Nakuru

Nakuru holds both black and white rhino, with reliable sightings that are hard to match anywhere else in Kenya. It’s also the main stronghold for Rothschild’s giraffe, a paler, more delicately marked subspecies that was relocated here from western Kenya for its protection. Lion, leopard and cheetah are all present, along with large numbers of waterbuck and troops of baboon around the cliffs. The lake itself is famous for its flamingos, though it’s worth knowing that their numbers shift a lot from year to year depending on water levels and algae conditions, and in wetter years the big flocks sometimes move to nearby Lake Bogoria or Lake Elementaita instead. Even without a huge flamingo count, the park’s birdlife stays strong, with well over 400 species recorded.

Best Time to Visit Lake Nakuru

January to March and June to October: the drier months, generally best for overall wildlife viewing and for road conditions inside the park.
Flamingo numbers vary year to year, so if seeing them is your main goal, ask us closer to your travel dates, since we can check recent conditions before you commit to a route built around them.
Early morning: a good time for both photography at Baboon Cliff and for spotting leopard, which are more active before the day warms up.

Top Safari Experiences in Lake Nakuru

Rhino tracking, with strong odds of seeing both black and white rhino in a single game drive.

Baboon Cliff viewpoint, for wide views over the lake and the Rift Valley escarpment beyond it.

Rothschild’s giraffe sightings, often close enough for a good photograph against the Rift Valley backdrop.

Birdwatching along the lakeshore, whatever the current flamingo count, thanks to the park’s strong all-round bird diversity.

Lake Nakuru Safari Itineraries

A fenced, rhino-focused park near Nairobi, home to both black and white rhino, Rothschild’s giraffe, and a lake known for its shifting flamingo flocks.

[21
post-287","destination","type-destination","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-nakuru
["GET
