It holds the largest elephant population in northern Tanzania, set against a landscape of ancient baobab trees that makes it one of the most photogenic parks on the whole circuit.

Why Visit Tarangire?

At around 2,850 square kilometres, Tarangire is Tanzania’s sixth largest park, and its defining feature is the Tarangire River, the only reliable water source for a wide stretch of surrounding country. During the dry season, that river turns into a magnet, pulling in wildlife from across the wider ecosystem in numbers that rival anywhere in Africa. The landscape itself is part of the draw too, dotted with baobab trees that can live well over a thousand years, their thick, twisted trunks giving the park an almost prehistoric look. Because it sees far fewer visitors than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, game drives here tend to feel more private, without a queue of vehicles at every sighting.

Wildlife in Tarangire

Tarangire is best known for elephant, with an estimated 2,500 individuals calling the park home and herds of 200 to 300 gathering along the river during the dry season, among the most impressive elephant concentrations anywhere on the continent. Lion, leopard and cheetah are all present, along with wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, giraffe and impala. The park is also one of the more reliable spots for fringe-eared oryx and lesser kudu, two antelope species that are harder to find elsewhere on the northern circuit, and African wild dog turn up seasonally. Birdlife is outstanding, with over 500 species recorded, including large concentrations around the Silale Swamps in the park’s remote southern section.

Best Time to Visit Tarangire

June to October: the dry season, when wildlife concentrates heavily along the Tarangire River, the park’s single best feature for game viewing.
November to May: the green season, when animals spread out across the wider ecosystem and are somewhat harder to find, but the landscape turns a vivid emerald and crowds thin out further.
Year round: even outside peak season, Tarangire holds strong resident wildlife, particularly its elephant herds.

Top Safari Experiences in Tarangire

Game drives along the Tarangire River, especially in the dry season, when elephant herds gather in large numbers.

Baobab tree photography, using the park’s ancient, distinctively shaped trees as a backdrop.

Walking safaris with an armed ranger, one of the few parks on the circuit where this is offered.

Birdwatching around the Silale Swamps, in the park’s quieter southern reaches.

Tarangire Safari Itineraries

Northern Tanzania’s elephant stronghold, known for ancient baobab trees, dry-season herds along the Tarangire River, and far fewer crowds than the Serengeti.

[26
post-302","destination","type-destination","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-tarangire
["GET
