Lake Nakuru

The Flamingo Lake of the Great Rift Valley

Overview

About Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru National Park, nestled within the dramatic Great Rift Valley in central Kenya, is one of Africa’s most visually spectacular wildlife destinations. The park’s centrepiece — Lake Nakuru — is a shallow, alkaline lake famous for the vast flocks of lesser and greater flamingos that stain its shores deep pink, creating one of the world’s most extraordinary natural spectacles.

Beyond the flamingos, Lake Nakuru is a Big Five park. It is especially renowned as a sanctuary for both black and white rhinos — making it one of Kenya’s best places to see these critically endangered animals. The park also harbours lion, leopard, buffalo, hippo, Rothschild’s giraffe, and the rare Defassa waterbuck.

The surrounding forest and escarpment provide a beautiful green backdrop to the lake, and the views from Baboon Cliff and Lion Hill across the entire valley are simply unforgettable.
