Good to Know

Best time to visit:

  • July to October: the Great Migration, river crossings
  • January to March: excellent predator viewing, fewer crowds
  • April to June: green season, lush scenery, lower rates
  • November to December: short rains, fewer tourists, good wildlife

Is flying worth it? For first-time visitors and those short on time, absolutely. You save two full days of driving and get 4 to 5 game drives instead of 2 to 3.

Children: welcome. Many camps have family rooms and special children’s rates.

Private vehicle: most packages use shared vehicles (6 to 8 guests). A private vehicle is available for a supplement (300 to 400 USD per day).

Hot air balloon safari: book ahead, spots fill up fast during peak season.

Why Fly from the Coast?

The Maasai Mara is 570 km from Mombasa by road, roughly 7 to 8 hours of driving each way. Flying changes the whole experience:

  • Time saved: 1.5 to 2 hours instead of a full day of driving
  • Arrive rested: start your safari right away, with no travel fatigue
  • Scenic flight: aerial views over Tsavo, the Rift Valley and the Mara
  • More time for wildlife: 4 to 5 safaris instead of 2 to 3
  • No backtracking: a direct flight from the coast and back
