What the day looks like

Malindi isn’t just a beach destination, it’s one of the most respected big game fishing grounds in the world. Where the Sabaki River meets the Indian Ocean, the water changes colour a few miles from shore, a nutrient rich edge that draws baitfish and, in turn, the predators that make this coast famous. Malindi is particularly known for sailfish, found close to shore nearly year round, while marlin, black, blue and striped, run further out around the Malindi Banks and a series of underwater mountains locally known as the Rips.

The season shifts through the year. July to October brings yellowfin tuna, wahoo and the first sailfish and black marlin. Sailfish numbers peak from September through January, with December widely rated one of the best months on this coast. Marlin season runs roughly December through March, when blue, black and striped marlin are all in play, alongside the chance of swordfish further offshore.

Boats are skippered by experienced local crews, several with genuine Kenyan and world record catches behind them. Catch and release is standard practice, particularly for threatened billfish species, and most boats tag fish before releasing them as part of ongoing conservation tracking.
