What the day looks like

Ten minutes inland from Watamu, hidden inside indigenous forest, sit the remains of Gede, a Swahili trading town that thrived from the 13th century until it was mysteriously abandoned in the 1600s. At its peak, around 2,500 people lived here behind two coral stone walls, the inner one enclosing the wealthy, the outer one taking in 18 hectares of farmland and homes for everyone else.

What makes Gede worth the detour isn’t just the ruins themselves, it’s what’s been found among them. Archaeologists have uncovered Chinese porcelain, Venetian glass and Persian ceramics here, proof that this small coastal town was plugged into Indian Ocean trade networks stretching thousands of miles. Nobody knows exactly why the town was abandoned, theories range from raids to a falling water table, and that mystery is part of what gives the site its atmosphere.

Your guide leads you through the Great Mosque, the palace, and a coral tomb inscribed with a date in Arabic calligraphy, all of it now half reclaimed by forest, with baobab and tamarind roots wrapped around old archways. A huge baobab near the entrance has viewing platforms built into it, worth the small extra fee to climb for a view over the site. Sykes’ monkeys are a common sight watching from the canopy, and the small on-site museum adds context before or after your walk through the ruins.

We collect you from your hotel and keep the visit unhurried, most visitors spend one to two hours on site, making this an easy add-on to a beach day rather than something that eats into your whole afternoon.
