7 Days 6 Nights Mt Kilimanjaro Treking Rongai Route

Your Day-by-Day Itinerary Break Down

Kilimanjaro Climb: Rongai Route

Rongai is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border, which makes it quieter and drier than the busier southern routes. You climb up one side and descend a different way, via Marangu, so you see more of the mountain overall. All nights on the mountain are spent in tents, except the final one at Kibo Hut.

Day 1

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport

You’re transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Your guide meets you in the evening for a briefing and gear check. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 2

Climb: Nalemoru Village (1,950m) to First Cave (2,650m)

After breakfast, you’re driven to Nalemoru, where the trek begins. The trail passes through cultivated farmland and pine forest before entering the moorland zone at First Cave. Dinner and overnight at First Cave. Hiking time: around 3 to 4 hours.

Day 3

Climb: First Cave to Second Cave (3,475m) to Third Cave (3,600m)

The trail climbs steadily through moorland, passing Second Cave, which offers clear views of Kibo and its eastern ice fields on a good day, before continuing to Third Cave (also known as Kikelewa Cave) for the night. Dinner and overnight at Third Cave. Hiking time: around 5 to 7 hours.

Day 4

Climb: Third Cave to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)

A shorter but steep climb up grassy slopes brings you to Mawenzi Tarn, set beneath the jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak. This is a deliberately shorter day, built in to help your body adjust before the bigger push to Kibo Hut. Dinner and overnight at Mawenzi Tarn. Hiking time: around 3 to 4 hours.

Day 5

Climb: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut (4,700m)

You cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a relatively flat but exposed stretch, before reaching Kibo Hut, your base for the summit attempt. Rest as much as possible during the afternoon and keep drinking water ahead of the night climb. Dinner and overnight at Kibo Hut. Hiking time: around 4 to 5 hours.

Day 6

Climb: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

You set off around midnight for the summit push, reaching Gilman’s Point on the crater rim after several hours, then continuing on to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After a rest and some tea and biscuits back at Kibo Hut, you continue descending to Horombo Hut for the night. Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 7

Climb: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, transfer to Arusha

After breakfast, you descend to Marangu Gate, where a vehicle takes you back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 8

Day 8: Arusha to Kilimanjaro Airport

Transfer to the airport for your flight home, or extend your trip with a safari or time in Zanzibar.

Helpful Tips

  • We include the Mawenzi Tarn night rather than pushing straight to Kibo Hut in one day, since the extra stop meaningfully improves acclimatization before summit night.
  • Pack layers, since conditions shift from warm farmland at the start to well below freezing on summit night.
  • A sleeping bag rated for sub-zero temperatures is essential above 4,000m.
  • Rongai gets less rain than the southern routes, but it’s also more remote, so make sure your gear list is complete before you set off.
  • Tell your guide immediately if you notice altitude symptoms like headache or nausea, which can affect anyone regardless of fitness level.

FAQS

The extra day adds an overnight at Mawenzi Tarn, which most operators treat as a standard part of this route rather than an optional extra, since it breaks up what would otherwise be a very large single-day altitude gain to Kibo Hut.
Yes. Some operators offer a 9 day version with a dedicated rest day at Mawenzi Tarn on top of the overnight stop. Ask us if you’d like that added.
Rongai is quieter and drier, since it approaches from the northern, less-visited side of the mountain, and it descends via a different route than it ascends. Machame and Lemosho are more scenic on the southern and western sides but see more foot traffic.
Yes. Check current visa or eTA requirements for your nationality with the Tanzanian High Commission or an official government site before booking.
Yes. Day 8 ends in Arusha or at Kilimanjaro Airport, from where we can arrange a safari or a beach stay in Zanzibar.
