8 Days Mt Kilimanjaro Climb Marangu Route

Your Day-by-Day Itinerary Break Down

Kilimanjaro Climb: Marangu Route

The Marangu route, nicknamed the “Coca-Cola” route, is the only way up Kilimanjaro where you sleep in huts instead of a tent, with a bed, a roof, and often hot showers along the way. It’s also the only route where you go up and down the same path, giving you a second look at Mawenzi and Kibo peaks on the way out. Marangu can be climbed in 5 days, but we only offer the 6 day version, since the extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut meaningfully improves your chances of reaching the summit safely.

Day 1

Airport to hotel

You’re met at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel, with hot showers, a pool and Wi-Fi. In the evening, your tour manager briefs you on the climb ahead, answers questions, and sorts out any rental gear you need.

Day 2

Marangu Gate (1,860m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m)

After a morning briefing, you’re driven to Marangu Gate, on the mountain’s eastern side, where your guide handles permits and registration. The trail climbs through rainforest, where rain showers are common, so pack a raincoat. Since this is your first day at altitude, avoid caffeine and alcohol, drink at least four litres of water through the day, and tell your guide immediately if you notice symptoms like nausea or headache, both common as your body adjusts. Change in elevation: 1,860m to 2,700m. Distance: 11km. Hiking time: 5 to 7 hours.

Day 3

Mandara Hut (2,700m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

A moderate day’s trekking brings you to Horombo Hut, where clear days give you views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. After lunch, you’ll do a short acclimatization walk toward Kibo Hut, gaining around 200m in altitude before returning to Horombo for the night. These short extra hikes matter more than they seem, since they help your body adjust ahead of time. Main hike: 2,700m to 3,720m, 10km, 5 to 6 hours. Acclimatization hike: up to around 3,920m and back, 2.5km, 1 to 2 hours.

Day 4

Acclimatization day at Horombo Hut

A second acclimatization hike heads further toward Kibo Hut before returning to Horombo. The afternoon is yours to rest, explore nearby, or photograph Mawenzi. This built-in rest day is the main reason the 6 day itinerary has meaningfully better outcomes than the 5 day version. Acclimatization hike: up to around 4,500m and back, 5 to 8km, 3 to 4 hours.

Day 5

Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Kibo Hut (4,700m)

The trail continues up to Kibo Hut, your base for the summit push. It’s not a technically hard day, but pace yourself and conserve energy. On arrival, rest as much as possible and keep drinking water ahead of the night ascent. Change in elevation: 3,720m to 4,700m. Distance: 10km. Hiking time: 4 to 8 hours.

Day 6

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Horombo Hut

You set off at night for the summit push, with a guide accompanying each pair of climbers to monitor how you’re doing. Reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, is a major achievement, and if conditions allow, you can walk to the nearest glacier before heading back down. After a short rest at Kibo Hut, you continue descending to Horombo. Take the descent as carefully as the ascent, since fatigue and loose footing make this stretch its own kind of challenge. Change in elevation: 4,700m up to 5,895m, then down to 3,720m. Distance: 16km. Hiking time: 9 to 12 hours.

Day 7

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

After breakfast, you descend back to Marangu Gate, where the group gathers, certificates are handed out, and you’re transferred back to your hotel. Change in elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m. Distance: 18km. Hiking time: 5 to 6 hours.

Day 8

Helpful Tips

  • We only run the 6 day Marangu itinerary, not the 5 day version, since the extra acclimatization day makes a real difference to your chances of reaching the summit.
  • Diamox can help with altitude symptoms for some climbers, but talk to your doctor before your trip to check it’s right for you.
  • Break in your hiking boots well before you travel, since blisters on a multi-day trek are avoidable and miserable.
  • Pack for a wide temperature range, from warm rainforest heat at the start to well below freezing on summit night.
  • Descend carefully and at your own pace on day 6, since tired legs and loose scree are a common cause of slips.

FAQS

The 5 day version skips the extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, and published figures consistently show it has a much lower summit success rate than the 6 day itinerary. We’d rather give you a realistic shot at the summit than a shorter, cheaper trip with worse odds.
It varies by source and by climber, but published data puts the 6 day Marangu route in the range of roughly 50 to 70%, meaningfully better than the 5 day version but generally lower than longer routes like Machame or Lemosho, which allow more time to acclimatize.
No technical skill is required, and the trail itself is graded and gentle. What matters most is how your body handles the altitude, which affects fit and unfit people differently.
It’s not required, but many climbers find it helps with altitude symptoms. Speak to your doctor before your trip, since it isn’t suitable for everyone.
Yes. Check current visa or eTA requirements for your nationality with the Tanzanian High Commission or an official government site before booking.
