7 Days 6 Nights Mt Kilimanjaro Trekking Machame Route

Your Day-by-Day Itinerary Break Down

The Machame route is one of the most popular ways up Kilimanjaro, and for good reason. It’s scenic, well-supported, and its route profile, climbing high and sleeping lower on several days, gives your body a real chance to adjust to the altitude before summit night. This package covers the full climb, plus a night in Arusha before and after, so you’re not managing your own transfers around such a demanding trek. All nights on the mountain are spent in tents.

Day 1

Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, transfer to Arusha

You’ll be met at the airport and driven to your hotel in Usa River, near Arusha. The rest of the day is free to rest by the pool or explore the town. In the late afternoon, a member of our Kilimanjaro team briefs you on the days ahead. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 2

Climb: Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (3,010m)

After breakfast, you’re driven to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate to complete registration, then set off on a five to six hour hike through lush rainforest, home to black-and-white colobus monkeys and endemic plants like Impatiens kilimanjari. Dinner and overnight at Machame Camp.

Day 3

Climb: Machame Camp (3,010m) to Shira Camp (3,845m)

Today’s hike is shorter in distance but steady in climb, taking you out of the rainforest and into moorland, with your first real views of the mountain opening up as you approach Shira Camp. Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp.

Day 4

Climb: Shira Camp (3,845m) to Lava Tower (4,630m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

This is your main acclimatization day, climbing around 700m to Lava Tower before descending to sleep at a lower altitude than you reached, an approach that helps your body adjust. The six to seven hour hike passes through alpine desert and the Barranco Valley, known for its giant lobelia and senecio plants. Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.

Day 5

Climb: Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

You start by climbing the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical scramble where you’ll use your hands for balance, with your guide supporting you throughout. The three to four hour trek continues along a ridge with striking views before reaching Karanga Camp. Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.

Day 6

Climb: Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

A three to four hour walk across dry, exposed terrain brings you to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. Given the early start ahead, dinner is served early and you’ll be encouraged to rest as much as possible. Overnight at Barafu Camp.

Day 7

Climb: Barafu Camp (4,640m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,080m)

Around midnight, you’re woken for tea and a light snack before setting off on the final ascent by headlamp. Reaching Stella Point, on the crater rim, typically takes five to seven hours, with a further one to two hours to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After time at the summit, you descend back to Barafu for a rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for your last night on the mountain. Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.

Day 8

Climb: Mweka Camp (3,080m) to Mweka Gate (1,630m), transfer to Arusha

After a farewell ceremony from your mountain crew, you descend through the rainforest one last time, reaching Mweka Gate in around two to three hours, where certificates are issued. You’re then driven back to your hotel for a proper shower and a relaxed rest of the day. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 9

Arusha to Kilimanjaro Airport

After breakfast, you’re transferred to the airport for your flight home, or you can extend your trip with a safari or a few days in Zanzibar.

Helpful Tips

  • Spend time before your trip breaking in your hiking boots, since blisters on summit night are miserable and avoidable.
  • The 7 day version of this route gives your body more time to acclimatize than the shorter 5 or 6 day options, which generally improves your chances of a comfortable summit.
  • Pack layers. Temperatures range from warm rainforest heat on day 1 to well below freezing on summit night.
  • A good sleeping bag rated for sub-zero temperatures is essential, since nights above 4,000m get cold even in a tent.
  • Altitude affects everyone differently regardless of fitness level, so tell your guide immediately if you’re feeling unwell at any point.

FAQS

Yes. The climb itself, from Machame Gate to Mweka Gate, takes 7 days and 6 nights camping on the mountain. The 9 day total includes one night in Arusha before the climb and one night after, which most guests need anyway to arrive, rest, and recover before flying out.
No technical climbing skill is needed, but you should be comfortable walking for 5 to 8 hours a day on uneven terrain. Cardiovascular fitness helps, but altitude affects people differently regardless of fitness level.
Longer routes like this 7 day Machame itinerary generally have higher summit success rates than shorter 5 or 6 day treks, since the extra time helps with acclimatization. Even so, no operator can guarantee a summit, since it depends on how your body responds to altitude.
Yes. Check current visa or eTA requirements for your nationality with the Tanzanian High Commission or an official government site before booking.
