Mangrove Boardwalk Walk
The walk starts on the community boardwalk, about 600 metres long, which runs above the mangroves. Your guide shows you the different mangrove types and explains how the trees protect the coast and the fish.
Mudflats and Crabs at Low Tide
When the tide is low, the boardwalk leads out onto the exposed mudflats. Thousands of small crabs move across the mud, and the mangrove roots are fully visible. If you prefer a shorter walk, we can plan the trip for high tide instead.
Canoe Ride Through the Mangroves
You board a traditional wooden canoe and paddle through the mangrove channels, the same way local fishermen do. The water is calm, and the ride is quiet enough to spot wildlife.
Birdwatching
Mida Creek is a recognised bird area with more than 65 species of water birds. Herons, kingfishers, storks and fish eagles live here all year, and migratory birds arrive between October and March. Flamingos appear at times, but we cannot promise them.
Lunch at the Crab Shack in Dabaso
The trip ends with a seafood lunch at the Crab Shack, on the edge of the creek. Crab samosas, grilled fish and prawns are the popular dishes. Tell us about any allergies or vegetarian needs when you book.

Good to Know
- Tides decide the trip: Low tide is best for the mudflat walk, the crabs and the birds. Canoes only run when there is enough water, so the walk is longer at low tide and shorter at high tide.
- Best season: The creek is open all year. Birdwatching is at its best from October to March, when migratory birds arrive from Europe and Asia.
- What to bring: A hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars and a camera. Wear closed shoes or sandals that can get muddy.
- Walking: The boardwalk is narrow and sometimes low, and the mudflat walk can be muddy. Tell us if you have mobility issues and we will arrange the trip at high tide.
- Children: Children can join. Tell us their ages when you book.
- Community project: The boardwalk is run by the local community, and your entrance fee supports mangrove conservation.
- Sunset option: The creek is very beautiful at sunset. Ask us if you want an afternoon version of the trip.
