Hell’s Kitchen Malindi Tour: Half Day Sunset Visit in Marafa

The Hell's Kitchen Malindi tour is a half day trip to Marafa, about 45 minutes inland. You walk the sandstone canyon with a local guide and stay to watch the sunset.

What to Expect on This Excursion

Sandstone Canyon Viewpoints

Hell’s Kitchen is a canyon of white, pink, orange and deep red sandstone. Wind and rain have carved it into gorges, ridges and pillars, some of them up to 30 metres tall. Your guide takes you to the best viewpoints along the rim.

Walk Into the Gorges

You walk down into the canyon on foot and move between the rock walls. The sand is soft and the paths can be steep in places, so you go at your own pace.

The Giriama Legend of Nyari

The local Giriama people call the canyon Nyari, which means “the place broken by itself”. Your guide tells the story of a wealthy family whose greed brought the ground down on them, and also explains how erosion really formed the canyon.

Sunset Colours

The rock changes colour as the light drops, turning deeper red and gold. We time the visit so you are in the canyon during the last hour of light, when photos are at their best.

Good to Know

  • Drive time: Marafa is about 30 to 40 km inland from Malindi, and the drive takes about 45 minutes. Part of the road is dirt, so a private vehicle is the easiest way to go.
  • Heat: The canyon traps heat and is one of the hottest spots on the coast, which is how it got its name. Late afternoon is cooler, so we schedule the visit for then.
  • What to bring: A hat, sunscreen, a water bottle, a camera and closed shoes with good grip. Sandals slip on the soft sand.
  • Walking: The paths are steep in places and the sand is loose. Tell us if you have mobility issues and we will keep you on the viewpoints.
  • Best season: The dry months give clearer views and easier roads. After heavy rain the paths can be slippery.
  • Community managed: The canyon belongs to the local Giriama community, and your entrance fee goes to them.
  • Full day option: Ask us if you want to combine Hell’s Kitchen with a morning stop on the coast.
