You depart early, around 6 AM, spend the full day in the park with two or three game drives, and return to your coastal hotel that same evening. It’s a long day, but absolutely worth it. Shimba Hills is an even easier day trip from Diani, just 30 minutes away.

Tsavo, Shimba Hills and Amboseli are great year-round, unlike the Maasai Mara, which is strongly seasonal. The dry seasons (January–March and July–October) offer the best wildlife-viewing opportunities, since animals gather around remaining water sources and vegetation is lower. The short rains (November) and long rains (April–June) make some park roads difficult to drive, but the vegetation is lush, the birdlife is spectacular, and you’ll often have the park to yourself.

4:30 PM: Return to Mombasa

Don’t drive. Fly. From Malindi Airport you can take a direct scheduled flight to the Masai Mara. The flight takes about 2 hours. This way you completely avoid the 8-hour road trip.

I’ll be honest with you. This is the biggest myth I’ve heard. The Masai Mara is spectacular, I won’t deny it. But here’s what most people don’t know: the Tsavo conservation area is one of the largest protected areas in the world — actually bigger than the Mara. It’s home to over 12,000 elephants, Kenya’s largest lion population, and landscapes so varied it feels like three different parks in one. From Watamu, you can reach Tsavo East in under 2 hours. From the Mara, it would take 8 hours by car just to get there. My advice: don’t let “Mara fever” make you overlook the incredible wildlife right on your doorstep. Visit Tsavo from the coast. Save the Mara for a longer trip, when you can fly from Malindi or Mombasa airport.

I get asked this question at least once a month, usually by someone who’s read The Man-Eaters of Tsavo or seen The Ghost and the Darkness. Let me reassure you: that happened in 1898. It’s been over 125 years. Today’s Tsavo lions are wild animals, yes, but they’re used to safari vehicles and are studied by researchers who track their movements. We follow strict safety protocols: we never get out of the vehicle inside the park, we keep a safe distance, and we listen to our guides, who know the lion prides and their behavior. I’ve guided thousands of families with kids as young as 5 through Tsavo. Everyone has been safe, and the kids go home telling their friends about the “lion king” they saw.

I wish I could guarantee wildlife sightings, but nature doesn’t work that way. Still, I can tell you when the odds are highest, based on 15 years of data. From Mombasa, Diani, Watamu and Malindi:

Best time to see elephants in Tsavo: June–September (dry season). They gather around remaining water sources, like Aruba Dam and the Galana River.
Best time to see lions: January–February (short dry season). Vegetation is lower, making them easier to spot.
Best time to see rhinos in Tsavo West: year-round at Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, though morning visits are best.
Best time to spot leopards: comes down to luck. They’re elusive animals. That said, my best sightings have been during the rainy seasons (April–May and November), when they use the roads to avoid wet grass.
Best time to spot buffalo: any time. They’re everywhere.

My honest advice: come during the dry season (June–September or January–February) for the best overall visibility. But even in the “green” season, newborn animals and dramatic skies make for magical experiences.
